Armando Herrera

Fourth Theology

Theological College
Virginia Military Institute

My name is Armando Herrera. I was born in Morristown, New Jersey and grew up in Hackettstown, New Jersey with my two parents and two younger sisters. Before high school we moved to Roanoke, Virginia and I began to attend Roanoke Catholic High School. I love playing sports and in high school I played baseball, soccer, and wrestled.

After high school, I went to the Virginia Military Institute where I also wrestled and was on an Army ROTC scholarship. I had no interest in practicing my faith even though my parents had done a phenomenal job in educating me and instilling the Catholic faith. My third class year (sophomore year) I had a powerful encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist that changed my life forever. I fell in love with Jesus and wanted to do nothing else but follow him and give him my love. Even though my love is poor and weak I know if I continue to put myself in his hands, he will help me to love him and others as I should.

I entered seminary right after I graduated and commissioned from VMI. I feel called not only to diocesan priesthood but also military chaplaincy. I’ve enjoyed my time in seminary formation and I am grateful for this call the Lord has put on my heart. Please pray for me and all the other seminarians in formation and please pray also for more men to answer the Lord’s call to labor in his vineyard.

“You know me right well; my frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance; in your book were written every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139: 14-16)
